क्यों 12 जनवरी को भारत में राष्ट्रीय युवा दिवस मनाया जाता है?
संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ द्वारा वर्ष 1985 को “अंतर्राष्ट्रीय युवा वर्ष” घोषित किया गया था. इसी बात को मद्देनजर रखते हुए भारत सरकार ने घोषणा की थी कि सन 1985 से हर वर्ष 12 जनवरी यानी स्वामी विवेकानंद के जन्मदिवस को देशभर में राष्ट्रीय युवा दिन के रूप में मनाया जाए। इस संदर्भ में भारत सरकार का विचार था कि स्वामी जी का दर्शन, उनका जीवन तथा कार्य एवं उनके आदर्श भारतीय युवकों के लिए प्रेरणास्रोत साबित हो सकते हैं. इस दिन देश भर के विद्यालयों एवं महाविद्यालयों में तरह-तरह के कार्यक्रम होते हैं, रैलियां निकाली जाती हैं, योगासन की स्पर्धा आयोजित की जाती है, पूजा-पाठ होता है, व्याख्यान होते हैं और विवेकानन्द साहित्य की प्रदर्शनी लगती है। इसके अलावा स्वामी विवेकानंद के जन्मदिवस के अवसर पर हर वर्ष देश भर में फैले रामकृष्ण मिशन के केन्द्रों एवं बेलूर मठ में भारतीय संस्कृति और परंपरा को समृद्ध करने हेतु कई कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन किया जाता है.
स्वामी विवेकानंद से संबंधित कुछ रोचक तथ्य
1. बचपन में विवेकानंद की मां ने उनका नाम "वीरेश्वर" रखा था तथा उन्हें अक्सर "बिली" कहकर बुलाया जाता था। बाद में उनका नाम नरेंद्रनाथ दत्त रखा गया.
2. अपने पिता की मृत्यु के बाद स्वामी जी का जीवन गरीबी में बीता. उस समय उनकी मां और बहन को प्रत्येक दिन के भोजन के लिए बहुत संघर्ष करना पड़ता था। कई बार स्वामी जी दो दो दिनों तक भूखे रहते थे ताकि परिवार के अन्य लोगों को पर्याप्त भोजन मिल सके.
3. बी.ए. की डिग्री होने के बावजूद स्वामी विवेकानंद को नौकरी की खोज में भटकना पड़ा था, जिसके कारण वे लगभग नास्तिक हो गए थे और भगवान से उनका विश्वास उठ गया था.
4. खेत्री के महाराजा अजीत सिंह गोपनीय तरीके से स्वामीजी की मां को आर्थिक सहायता के तौर पर नियमित रूप से 100 रूपये भेजते थे.
5. स्वामी जी में इतनी सादगी थी कि 1896 में तो उन्होंने लंदन में कचौरियां तक बनाई थी.
6. स्वामी विवेकानंद ने भविष्यवाणी की थी कि वे 40 वर्ष की आयु प्राप्त नहीं कर सकेंगे। उनकी यह बात तब सच साबित हो गई जब 4 जुलाई 1902 को उनकी मृत्यु 39 वर्ष की उम्र में ही हो गई। उन्होने समाधि की अवस्था में अपने प्राण त्यागे। उनके निधन की वजह तीसरी बार दिल का दौरा पड़ना था.
7. स्वामी विवेकानंद को 31 बीमारियां थी. एक बीमारी उनका निद्रा रोग से ग्रसित होना भी था.
8. एक बार स्वामी विवेकानंद विदेश गए जहाँ उनके स्वागत के लिए कई लोग आये हुए थे उन लोगों ने स्वामी विवेकानंद की तरफ हाथ मिलाने के लिए हाथ बढाया और इंग्लिश में HELLO कहा जिसके जवाब में स्वामी जी ने दोनों हाथ जोड़कर नमस्ते कहा. वहां उपस्थित लोगो को लगा कि शायद स्वामी जी को अंग्रेजी नहीं आती है अतः उनमें से एक व्यक्ति ने उनसे हिंदी में पूछा “आप कैसे हैं?” तब स्वामी जी ने कहा “आई एम् फ़ाईन थैंक यू.” यह सुनकर सभी लोगों ने आश्चर्यचकित होकर स्वामी जी से पूछा की जब हमने आपसे इंग्लिश में बात की तो आपने हिंदी में उत्तर दिया और जब हमने हिंदी में पूछा तो आपने इंग्लिश में कहा इसका क्या कारण है? तब तब स्वामी जी ने कहा कि "जब आप अपनी माँ का सम्मान कर रहे थे तब मैं अपनी माँ का सम्मान कर रहा था और जब आपने मेरी माँ का सम्मान किया तब मैंने आपकी माँ का सम्मान किया.”
9. एक बार जब स्वामी विवेकानन्द जी विदेश गए तो उनका भगवा वस्त्र और पगड़ी देख कर लोगों ने पूछा, कि आपका बाकी सामान कहाँ है? इस पर स्वामी जी बोले "बस यही सामान है.” इस बात पर कुछ लोगों ने व्यंगय किया कि "अरे! यह कैसी संस्कृति है आपकी? तन पर केवल एक भगवा चादर लपेट रखी है. कोट-पतलून जैसा कुछ भी पहनावा नहीं है? इस पर स्वामी विवेकानंद ने मुस्कुराते हुए जवाब दिया, कि "हमारी संस्कृति आपकी संस्कृति से भिन्न है. आपकी संस्कृति का निर्माण आपके दर्जी करते हैं, जबकि हमारी संस्कृति का निर्माण हमारा चरित्र करता है. इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि संस्कृति का निर्माण वस्त्रों से नहीं बल्कि चरित्र के विकास से होती है.

Why is National Youth Day celebrated in India on 12 January?
The year 1985 was declared as the "International Youth Year" by the United Nations. Keeping this in view, the Government of India had announced that every year since 1985, January 12, that is, the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, should be celebrated as National Youth Day all over the country. In this context, the idea of the Government of India was that Swamiji's philosophy, his life and work and his ideals could prove to be an inspiration for Indian youth. On this day, a variety of programs are held in schools and colleges across the country, rallies are held, Yogasan competitions are held, prayers are offered, lectures are held and Vivekananda literature is exhibited. Apart from this, on the occasion of the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, many programs are organized every year to enrich the Indian culture and tradition in the centers of Ramakrishna Mission spread across the country and Belur Math.
Some interesting facts related to Swami Vivekananda
1. In childhood, Vivekananda's mother named him "Veereshwar" and he was often called "Billy". Later he was named Narendranath Dutt.
2. After the death of his father, Swamiji's life was spent in poverty. At that time his mother and sister had to struggle a lot for each day's food. Many times Swamiji used to starve for two days so that other people of the family could get enough food.
3. B.A. Despite having a degree in science, Swami Vivekananda had to go astray in search of a job, due to which he became almost atheist and lost his faith in God.
4. Maharaja Ajit Singh of Khetri used to send 100 rupees regularly as financial aid to Swamiji's mother in a secret manner.
5. Swami ji had such simplicity that in 1896 he even made kachoris in London.
6. Swami Vivekananda predicted that he would not be able to attain the age of 40 years. His statement proved true when he died on 4 July 1902 at the age of 39. He gave up his life in the state of samadhi. The third reason for his death was a heart attack.
7. Swami Vivekananda had 31 illnesses. One disease was his suffering from sleeping sickness.
8. Once Swami Vivekananda went abroad where many people had come to welcome him, they raised their hands to join hands with Swami Vivekananda and said HELLO in English, in response to which Swamiji folded both hands and said hello. People present there thought that Swamiji may not know English, so one of them asked him in Hindi "How are you?" Then Swamiji said "I am thank you." Hearing this, everyone was surprised and asked Swamiji that when we spoke to you in English, you answered in Hindi and when we asked in Hindi, you said in English, what is the reason for this? Then Swamiji said that "When you were honoring your mother, I was honoring my mother and when you respected my mother, I respected your mother."
9. Once Swami Vivekananda went abroad, seeing his saffron clothes and turban, people asked, where is the rest of your belongings? Swami said, "This is the only thing." Some people sarcastically said, "Hey! What kind of culture is this? Only one saffron sheet is wrapped on the body. Isn't wearing something like a coat and trouser? To this, Swami Vivekananda smilingly replied, "Our culture is different from your culture. Your culture is built by your tailors, while our culture is constructed by our character. This means that culture is not built with clothes." It is rather the development of character.
