Q ➤ अंगAns ➤ यह महाजनपद मगध राज्य के पूर्व में स्थित था. इसकी राजधानी चंपा थी. आधुनिक भागलपुर और मुंगेर का क्षेत्र इसी जनपद में शामिल था. गौतम बुद्ध के समय में इस राज्य का मगध के साथ संघर्ष चलता रहा. संभवतः प्रारभ में अंग ने कुछ समय के लिए मगध को पराजित कर अपने में शामिल कर लिया. लेकिन शीघ्र ही इस जनपद की शक्ति क्षीण हो गयी और बिम्बिसार नामक शासक ने न केवल मगध को अंग से स्वतंत्र कराया बल्कि उसने अंग को भी अपने अधीन किया. कालांतर में यह राज्य मगध राज्य का ही हिस्सा बन गया.
Q ➤ मगधAns ➤ बौद्ध साहित्य में इस राज्य की राजधानी (गिरिव्रज या राजगीर) और निवासियों के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी प्राप्त होती है. वर्तमान पटना और गया जिलों के क्षेत्र इसके अंग थे. अथर्ववेद में भी इस राज्य का उल्लेख है.
Q ➤ काशीAns ➤ इसकी राजधानी वाराणसी (बनारस) थी. काशी के कौसल, मगध और अंग राज्यों से सम्बन्ध अच्छे नहीं रहे और प्रायः उसे उसने संघर्षरत रहना पड़ा. गौतम बुद्ध के समय में काशी राज्य का राजनैतिक पतन हो गया.
Q ➤ वृज्जि या वज्जि संघAns ➤ यह महाजनपद मगध के उत्तर में स्थित था. यह संघ आठ कुलों के संयोंग से बना और इनमें चार (विदेह, ज्ञातृक, वज्जि और लिच्छवि) कुल अधिक प्रमुख थे. विशाल इस संघ की राजधानी थी.
Q ➤ कोसलAns ➤ इन जनपद की सीमाएँ पूर्व में सदानीर नदी (गण्डक), पश्चिम में पंचाल, सर्पिका या स्यन्दिका नदी (सई नदी) दक्षिण और उत्तर में नेपाल की तलपटी थी. सरयू नदी इसे (कोसल जनपद को) दो भागों में विभाजित करती थी. एक उत्तरी कोसल जिसकी राजधानी श्रावस्ती थी और दूसरा दक्षिणी कोसल, जिसकी राजधानी कुशावती थी.
Q ➤ मल्लAns ➤ यह जनपद वज्जि संघ के उत्तर में स्थित एक पहाड़ी राज्य था. इसके दो भाग थे जिनमें एक की राजधानी कुशीनगर (जहाँ महात्मा बुद्ध को निर्वाण प्राप्त हुआ) और दूसरे भाग की राजधानी पावा (जहाँ वर्धमान महावीर को निर्वाण मिला) थी.
Q ➤ चेदिAns ➤ यह महाजनपद यमुना नदी के किनारे स्थित था. यह आधुनिक बुन्देलखंड के पूर्वी भाग और उसके समीपवर्ती भूखंड में फैला हुआ था. महाभारत के अनुसार “शुक्तिमती” इसकी राजधानी थी लेकिन “चेतियजातक” के अनुसार “सोत्थिवती” इसकी राजधानी थी. महाभारत के अनुसार शिशुपाल यहीं का शासक था.
Q ➤ वत्सAns ➤ काशी के पश्चिम भाग में प्रयाग के आसपास क्षेत्र में यह जनपद स्थित था. कौशाम्बी इसकी राजधानी थी. बुद्ध के समय में इसका शासक उदयन था.
Q ➤ कुरुAns ➤ उत्तर वैदिक साहित्य में इस जनपद के पर्याप्त विवरण प्राप्त होते हैं. इसके थानेश्वर (हरियाणा राज्य में) दिल्ली और मेरठ का क्षेत्र सम्मिलित थे. इसकी राजधानी इन्द्रप्रस्थ (हस्तिनापुर) थी.
Q ➤ पंचालAns ➤ यह जनपद उत्तर वैदिक काल में ही प्रसिद्ध था. इसमें वर्तमान रूबेलखंड और उसके समीप के कुछ जिले सम्मिलित थे. इसके दो भाग थे – उत्तरी पंचाल और दक्षिणी पंचाल. उत्तरी पंचाल की राजधानी अहिच्छत्र और दक्षिणी पंचाल की राजधानी काम्पिल्य थी. मूलतः यह जनपद एक राजतंत्र था लेकिन संभवतः कौटिल्य के काल में यहाँ गणतंत्रीय शासन व्यवस्था हो गयी.
Q ➤ मत्स्यAns ➤ इस जनपद में आधुनिक राजस्थान राज्य के जयपुर और अलवर जिले शामिल थे. विराट नगर संभवतः इसकी राजधानी थी. सम्भवतः यह जनपद कभी चेदि राज्य के अधीन रहा था.
Q ➤ शूरसेनAns ➤ मथुरा और उसके आसपास के क्षेत्र इस जनपद में शामिल थे. आधुनिक मथुरा नगर ही इसकी राजधानी था. बौद्ध ग्रन्थों में अयन्तिपुत्र शूरसेन राज्य का उल्लेख मिलता है. वह बौद्ध धर्म का अनुयायी और संरक्षक था.
Q ➤ अस्सक या अस्मकAns ➤ यह राज्य गोदावरी नदी के किनारे पर स्थित था. पाटेन अथवा पोटन इसकी राजधानी थी. पुराणों के अनुसार इस महाजनपद के शासक इक्ष्वाकु वंश के थे. जातक कथाओं में भी इस जनपद के अनेक राजाओं के नामों की जानकारी मिलती है.
Q ➤ अवन्तिAns ➤ अवंति राजतंत्र में लगभग उज्जैन प्रदेश और उसके आसपास के जिले थे. पुराणों के अनुसार पुणिक नामक सेनापति ने यदुवंशीय वीतिहोत्र नामक शासक की हत्या करके अपने पुत्र प्रद्योत को अवन्ति की गद्दी पर बैठाया. इसके अंतिम शासक नन्दवर्धन को मगध के शासक शिशुनाग ने पराजित किया और इसे अपने साम्राज्य का अंग बना लिया. यह महाजनपद दो भागों में विभाजित था. उत्तरी भाग की राजधानी उज्जयिनी और दक्षिणी भाग की राजधानी महिष्मति थी.
Q ➤ कम्बोजAns ➤ यह राज्य गांधार के पड़ोस में था. कश्मीर के कुछ भाग जैसे राजोरी और हजार जिले इसमें शामिल थे. संभवतः राजपुर या हाटक इसकी राजधानी थी.
Q ➤ गांधारAns ➤ इस जनपद में वर्तमान पेशावर, रावलपिण्डी और कुछ कश्मीर का भाग भी शामिल था. तक्षशिला इसकी राजधानी थी. गांधार का राजा पुमकुसाटी गौतम बुद्ध और बिम्बिसार का समकालीन था. उसने अवंति के राजा प्रद्योत से कई युद्ध किए और उसे पराजित किया. इसकी राजधानी विद्या का केंद्र था. देश-विदेश से विद्यार्थी यहाँ शिक्षा प्राप्त करने आते थे.
Q ➤ AngaAns ➤ This Mahajanapada was situated in the east of Magadha kingdom. Its capital was Champa. The area of modern Bhagalpur and Munger was included in this district. During the time of Gautam Buddha, the conflict of this kingdom with Magadha continued. Probably in the beginning Anga defeated Magadha for some time and included it in himself. But soon the power of this district weakened and a ruler named Bimbisara not only freed Magadha from Anga, but he also subjugated Anga. Later this state became a part of Magadha state itself.
Q ➤ MagadhAns ➤ Buddhist literature gives detailed information about the capital of this state (Girivraj or Rajgir) and its inhabitants. Areas of the present Patna and Gaya districts were part of it. This state is also mentioned in Atharvaveda.
Q ➤ KashiAns ➤ Its capital was Varanasi (Benaras). The relations of Kashi with Kausal, Magadha and Anga states were not good and he often had to struggle. During the time of Gautam Buddha, there was a political decline of the kingdom of Kashi.
Q ➤ Vrajji or Vajji SanghaAns ➤ This Mahajanapada was situated in the north of Magadha. This sangha was formed by the combination of eight clans and out of these four (Videha, Jyatrika, Vajji and Lichchavi) clans were more prominent. Vishal was the capital of this union.
Q ➤ KosalAns ➤ The boundaries of these districts were the Sadanir river (Gandak) in the east, Panchal, Sarpika or Sayandika river (Sai River) in the west and the foothills of Nepal in the south and north. The Saryu River used to divide it (Kosal district) into two parts. One northern Kosala whose capital was Shravasti and the other southern Kosala, whose capital was Kushavati.
Q ➤ MallAns ➤ This district was a hill state situated to the north of the Vajji union. It had two parts, in which the capital of one was Kushinagar (where Mahatma Buddha attained nirvana) and the capital of the other part was Pava (where Vardhaman Mahavir attained nirvana).
Q ➤ ChediAns ➤ This Mahajanapada was situated on the banks of river Yamuna. It was spread over the eastern part of modern Bundelkhand and its adjacent plots. According to Mahabharata "Shuktimati" was its capital but according to "Chetijatak" "Sotthivati" was its capital. According to Mahabharata, Shishupala was the ruler of this place.
Q ➤ VatsaAns ➤ This district was situated in the area around Prayag in the western part of Kashi. Kaushambi was its capital. Its ruler was Udayana during the time of Buddha.
Q ➤ KuruAns ➤ Adequate details of this district are found in the later Vedic literature. Its Thaneshwar (in the state of Haryana) included the area of Delhi and Meerut. Its capital was Indraprastha (Hastinapur).
Q ➤ PanchalAns ➤ This district was famous only in the later Vedic period. It included the present Rubelkhand and some of its adjoining districts. It had two parts – Northern Panchal and Southern Panchal. The capital of the northern Panchala was Ahichatra and the capital of the southern Panchala was Kampilya. Originally this district was a monarchy, but probably during the time of Kautilya, there was a republican system of governance.
Q ➤ MatsyaAns ➤ This district included Jaipur and Alwar districts of modern Rajasthan state. Virat Nagar was probably its capital. Probably this district was once under Chedi kingdom.
Q ➤ ShurasenAns ➤ Mathura and its surrounding areas were included in this district. Modern Mathura city was its capital. The mention of the kingdom of Ayantiputra Shurasen is found in Buddhist texts. He was a follower and patron of Buddhism.
Q ➤ Asak or AsmakAns ➤ This state was situated on the banks of river Godavari. Paten or Potan was its capital. According to the Puranas, the rulers of this Mahajanapada belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty. In the Jataka tales also information about the names of many kings of this district is found.
Q ➤ AvantiAns ➤ In the Avanti monarchy, there were approximately Ujjain region and its surrounding districts. According to the Puranas, a commander named Punik killed the Yaduvanshi Vitihotra ruler and placed his son Pradyot on the throne of Avanti. Its last ruler Nandvardhana was defeated by Shishunaga, the ruler of Magadha and made it a part of his empire. This Mahajanapada was divided into two parts. The capital of the northern part was Ujjayini and the capital of the southern part was Mahishmati.
Q ➤ KambojAns ➤ This kingdom was in the neighborhood of Gandhara. Parts of Kashmir such as Rajori and Hazar districts were included in this. Probably Rajpur or Hatak was its capital.
Q ➤ GandharaAns ➤ This district included the present Peshawar, Rawalpindi and part of Kashmir. Taxila was its capital. King Pumkusati of Gandhara was a contemporary of Gautam Buddha and Bimbisara. He fought many battles with King Pradyot of Avanti and defeated him. Its capital was the center of learning. Students from all over the country and abroad used to come here to get education.
