NEST 2021 Syllabus has been released by the authorities. This exam is conducted by the authority of CEBS and NISER Institutions jointly. It is a national level entrance exam. Through this screening test, candidates are able to get admission in the 5 years Integrated M.Sc. programme in the NEST Score accepting Institutions. Candidates can go through this article to know complete information about NEST Syllabus 2021.

NEST Syllabus 2021 contains the topics from the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and General Ability. The general ability section is compulsory section in the examination. However candidates can make a choice of any three subjects between Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology.

👉Physics Syllabus

General: Units and dimensions, dimensional analysis, significant figures, Methods of measurement (Direct, Indirect, Null), current and resistance. Design of some simple experiments. Graphical representation and interpretation of data, Errors in the measurements and error analysis

Mechanics: Kinematics in one and two dimensions (Cartesian coordinates only), projectiles. Uniform circular motion. Newton’s laws of motion. Kinetic and potential energy. Work and power. Conservation of linear momentum and mechanical energy. Centre of mass and its motion. Centre of gravity. Centripetal acceleration and centrifugal force. Gravitational potential and field. Acceleration due to gravity. Moment of inertia of uniform bodies with simple geometrical shapes.

Sound and mechanical waves: Plane wave motion, longitudinal and transverse waves, superposition of waves. Progressive and stationary waves. Doppler effect.

Thermal Physics: Thermal expansion of solids, liquids and gases. Heat conduction in one dimension. Elementary concepts of convection and radiation. Equivalence of heat and work. First and second law of thermodynamics and its applications, Kirchhoff’s law.

Electricity and Magnetism: Coulomb’s law. Electric field and potential. Electrical potential energy of a system of point charges and of electrical dipoles in a uniform electrostatic field; Gauss’s law and its application in simple cases.

Capacitance: Calculation of capacitance with and without dielectrics. Electric current. Ohm’s law. Series and parallel arrangements of resistances and cells. Moving coil galvanometer, voltmeter, ammeter and their conversions. Electromagnetic induction.

Optics: Reflection and refraction at plane and spherical surfaces, Deviation and dispersion of light by a prism. Combination of mirrors and thin lenses. Magnification. Wave nature of light – Huygens’s principle, interference limited to Young’s double slit experiment.

Modern Physics: Atomic nucleus. Alpha, beta and gamma radiations. Law of radioactive decay. Binding energy and its calculation. Photoelectric effect. Bohr’s theory of hydrogen like atoms. Characteristic and continuous X–rays, Moseley’s law. de Broglie wavelength of matter waves. Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.

Physical Chemistry: Measurements in chemistry, Atomic Structure & Chemical Bonding, Thermodynamics, Mole Concept, Gaseous and liquid states, Chemical equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Solutions, Chemical Kinetics, Periodic Table, Metals and Non Metals, Colloids, Solid State, Surface Chemistry..

Inorganic Chemistry: Classification of elements and periodicity in properties, Hydrogen Element, d-block Elements, p-block Elements , f-block Elements, s-block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Metals and Metallurgy

Organic Chemistry: Reactive intermediates, Alkanes, Nomenclature, Alkenes and Alkynes, Isomerism, Haloarenes, Halo alkanes (Alkyl halides), Aromatic compounds, Alcohols, Ethers, Phenols, Aldehydes and Ketones, Amines, Carboxylic Acid, Polymers, Amino acids and Proteins, carbohydrate.

Cell Biology, Ecosystems, Evolution, Biotechnology – Principles of recombinant DNA technology, Applications of biotechnology, Anatomy, Genetics, Humans and Environment, Biology of Plant Systems – Photosynthesis, Xylem and Phloem, Systematics – Principles of classical and new systematic, Binomial nomenclature, Familiarity with taxa. Plant breeding and tissue culture; Absorption and cell–water relations; Reproduction, Physiology, Human Health and Diseases, Ecology, Biology of Animal Systems – Digestive System, Excretory System, Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Reproductive System, Nervous System, Developmental Biology, Immunology.

👉Mathematics Syllabus

Algebra:Algebra of complex numbers, Quadratic equations, Probability, Arithmetic, Harmonic and Geometric Progression, Permutations and combinations, Logarithms and their properties, Addition and multiplication rules of probability, conditional probability, Bayes Theorem, Binomial theorem, Matrices, etc.
Trigonometry:Trigonometric functions, their periodicity and graphs, addition and subtraction formulae, formulae involving multiple and sub–multiple angles, general solution of trigonometric equations. Relations between sides and angles of a triangle, sine rule, cosine rule, half–angle formula and the area of a triangle, inverse trigonometric functions (principal value only).
Analytical Geometry:Two dimensions, Equation of a circle in various forms, Equations of a parabola, three dimensions, etc.
Differential calculus:Real valued functions of a real variable, Limit and continuity of a function, Even and odd functions, Derivatives of implicit functions, etc.
Integral calculus: Integration as the inverse process of differentiation, indefinite integrals of standard functions, definite integrals and their properties, Fundamental Theorem of Integral Calculus.
Vectors:Addition of vectors, scalar multiplication, dot and cross products, scalar triple products and their geometrical interpretations.

👉General Ability Syllabus

There is no prescribed syllabus for General Ability section. However, this section will contain questions from Science, History, Geography, English, Mathematics, G.K and Current affairs. Questions from mathematical ability of class 10th can also be asked in the paper. Passage type questions of science may also be asked. The questions asked in this paper will be designed to test the candidate’s familiarity with (and not a detailed understanding of) major historical milestones in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, astronomy, biology and environment. The aim of this paper is to test candidate’s aptitude for a career in science.
